Customs Procedures and Regulations in China

As with all international exports, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations in place for exporting goods to China. If you are sending goods to China, you will need to create a customs invoice that details the item, value, and country of origin, and reason for sending for each item included.

Prohibited items - include items that are commonly illegal internationally, in addition to items specifically controlled by China’s border forces. Carriers also have their own lists of prohibited and restricted items, too – so be sure to check these before shipping.

Restricted items - will only be admitted into China when the legal restrictions are followed. This means an error in paperwork, or missing documents, may result in your package being seized.

Here are some examples of items that are prohibited and restricted in export to China. You can find the Universal Postal Union’s full list of prohibited and restricted items, here.

Commonly Restricted items

  • Aerosols
  • Alcoholic beverages below 70% ABV
  • Batteries
  • Christmas Crackers
  • Electronic items
  • Food items
  • Lighters
  • Paints
  • Perfumes
  • Seeds and plants

Commonly Prohibited items

  • Alcoholic Beverages above 70%
  • Combustible Gases
  • Explosive materials
  • Firearms
  • Flammable materials
  • Meat products from a prohibition area
